This is a selfish smoothie. At a time of the year when food and cooking is all about hospitality, I’ve made something entirely for me, a concoction I knew from the start–with 100% certainty–that no one else in my house would desire except me.
But, it’s ok for several reasons. First, because I need a burst of energy for the next few days, and this revitalizing drink provides plenty. Second, because I am least “sharing” my drink with you, fair reader. Third, because balance is a good thing–i.e., it’s fine to take 10 minutes out of my day to do nothing save for savoring a smoothie…I think…still working on that one…and finally, because this simple drink thrills me to my toes, and that’s always fine justification for a food blog.
I should also mention that this is the inaugural smoothie from spanking brand new, first-ever Vitamix 750 Blender! I entered a Food Network Contest many months back that asked contestants to come devise a single recipe that makes use of a blender and combines (1) shrimp, (2) watermelon, (3) dill pickles, and (4) soy sauce. Seriously.
I entered the dessert category. Seriously.
Lucky me, I won a mixer! I promise to put it to good blog use in the days, months and years to come. I will, however, spare you my shrimp-watermelon-pickle-soy sauce assemblage.
Enjoy the days ahead, safe travels, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Notes
Beets are great for detoxing becuase they are packed with potassium, folate, fiber and antioxidants. They also contain betaine, a compound that may protect against liver damage, and help the liver process fats. It also contains the betacyanin, and antioxidant that may provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxification support (notably supporting glutathione-dependent phase 2 detoxification). Go Beets!

I like that there is no dairy. Please list dairy free. I like many (ignored) can not digest dairy.
So, if you have a Vitamix, why all the chopping and (especially) grating? It should work fine with all items coarsely chopped…
Sounds delicious — I look forward to trying it.
Also, I second the idea that you cannot possibly mention a shrimp pickle soy watermelon dessert and then not elaborate! Especially an award winning one!
Hi! If you have a Vitamix, you definitely do not need to do all the grating/chopping–I’ll make a note of that. But since the majority of people reading have a regular blender, I wanted to make sure they got a drinkable smoothie (rather than a chunky :)). Old habits die hard. I promise to provide more detail about the winning recipe (it was a Mexican popsicle/paleta) 🙂
why is this called a detox ..whats the calorie count ?
Hi, B! So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Long time lurker here. I made this smoothie this morning and it was delicious. I’ve made a lot of green smoothies before and had a lot of beet juice, but this was my first beet smoothie. Thanks so much for sharing.
lthis is gorgeous, Camilla! I would love more details about the shrimp-pickle-soy-watermelon dessert–I cannot imagine what you came up with!
Just what I need before–and after–tgiving! And I love beets, so this one is getting made tomorrow morning before the festivities begin
